In the older times, Children's Dental health was never taken seriously, as the parents and other elder family members believed that preservation and care of something that would eventually fall off in a few years are of no great value.
This was extremely sad, as children even if suffered from infections and abscesses were not taken to a pediatric dentist. There was a lack of dental awareness amongst common people and also a lot of myths surrounded kids' dental treatment back then.
The current trend however has undergone tremendous transition as parents are now more vigilant and active when it comes to their child’s overall health, including their Dental Health. In the current scenario, it has become even more important than the parents and caretakers pay full attention to the child’s dental health as the dietary pattern and habits have undergone enormous change in the past few years. For example, people staying in Gurgaon now put a lot of effort into searching for the best pediatric dentist in Gurgaon, kids’ dentist in Gurgaon, or children dentist in Gurgaon and they make sure that they are visiting one of the best kids’ dental clinics in Gurgaon.
There has been a deterioration in the Diet which now mainly comprises refined, sticky, and non-fibrous food items, unlike in the older times where the majority of the diet was highly fibrous and self-cleansing. Also, kids nowadays munch on junk food frequently between meals. The current transition in the feeding habits demands a meticulous oral hygiene regimen to be followed along with frequent and regular visits to a Pediatric Dentist. So, the awareness for Dental care has increased but the dietary habits have deteriorated.
As per the pediatric dentist, it is very unfortunate that Parents and Caretakers usually think that active tooth brushing should be started only once all the teeth of the child have erupted in the oral cavity. A Child attains his complete set of baby teeth by the age of 2-3 yrs.
It is said that in most parts of the world, parents do practically nothing before that age group as far as oral and dental hygiene is concerned. They wait for all the teeth to appear and settle in before commencing tooth brushing and cleaning.
As we all know that an infant relies mostly on milk till the age of 8-9 months and posts that on semi-solid not fibrous food items that are easy to chew with their newly erupted baby teeth. Adopting no oral hygiene at all from Birth to 3 yrs exposes these kids to an immense risk of Early Childhood Caries which can be extremely harmful affecting the child’s overall health and well-being eventually.
Most parents are surprised to know that the Suitable age to start cleaning the child’s Oral Cavity is about Right after birth. We know that no teeth have erupted by that time, but when we talk about oral hygiene, teeth are not the only parts of the mouth that need cleaning.
When a child feeds exclusively on milk which has an active cariogenic sugar called lactose, a thin layer of this sugar keeps getting deposited on the gum pads of these infants which should ideally be cleaned at regular intervals, at least once a day with a wet soft piece of clean cloth or wet gauge piece wrapped around the forefinger of the mother or the caregiver. This however should be done in an extremely gentle manner without hurting or annoying the child at all.
Teething starts in 6-8 months of age in infants and in general, this is the age when you can switch from Gauge cleaning to using a baby Toothbrush which again is in the form of a Finger toothbrush worn on the forefinger of the caretakers and gently done targeting only the erupted 1 or 2 teeth.
Every effort should be taken to avoid impinging the bristles of the newly introduced Finger brush on the child’s gum pad. Parents, sometimes have a tendency to rush up the whole procedure of brushing, accidentally & unknowingly hurt the soft tissue of the child, making the overall experience extremely unpleasant for the child. The use of toothpaste can be avoided at this very initial stage as the child would swallow whatever is being introduced at this time.
We, at our center, conduct Parents Counselling Sessions wherein the parents are taught to properly conduct oral hygiene practices for their kids as a routine. Our Pediatric Dentists answer all your doubts and queries related to Your Child’s Dental Care.
Most parents are usually in a dilemma as to when they should first take their child to a Pediatric Dentist. Most people think and believe that they should wait for the entire tooth set to completely erupt. Even worse, that few think that they should only visit a Pediatric dentist in case the child complaints of any dental pain or till they see a decayed tooth. Unfortunately, since time and ages, Dentistry has been closely associated with pain and discomfort. This is well established deep inside of most of us and we somehow don't want our children to be going through that experience. Dentistry has immensely evolved and surely for the better. Owing to the advancements in equipment and technology, it's no more a traumatic and painful experience at our pediatric dental clinic in Gurgaon.
Moreover, Paediatric Dentists are highly trained and skilled professionals, who are extremely efficient in dealing with your child’s oral and dental issues. They are trained to deal with child’s psychology and manage their fears accordingly inside a dental clinic. The first Dental visit of your child should be immediately after his/her first tooth erupts in the oral cavity. It's important that you visit a Pediatric dentist with your child because a specialist will not only check for caries or decays ( cavities as called by most of the parents) but also would examine the overall oral tissues like your child’s tissues of the inner cheek area, tongue, palate, lips, uvula ( tonsillar area), the floor of the mouth, etc.
The ambiance of our Centre is designed to provide your child with a soothing visual experience. Our Pediatric Dentists generally don’t initiate the treatment in the 1st visit itself, but this visit is just to:
Abnormality in the size and texture of the tongue. Redness, inflammation, or enlargements on any oral soft tissue.
Any Congenital anomalies are certain defects present right from the time of birth that may go unnoticed by the parents or the hospital staff.
Developmental anomalies usually develop over time after birth as the child grows.
Nutritional defects or pathologies are the results of inadequate nutritional intake of one or the other component of your Diet.
Any Abnormal findings are conveyed and thoroughly discussed with the parents. Early detection and diagnosis of any oro-dental abnormality prevent its more harmful long-term effects in the future.
As far as the teeth are concerned, parents might not always be able to look and detect incipient caries, which are dental decays or more specifically dental decalcifications which appear as mild white chalky lesions and not as brown or black spots or cavities.
These decalcified or hypo mineralized spots on teeth are known as Incipient caries could be remineralized and halted there and then, only and only if they are diagnosed and addressed at very early stages.
This simply means that a regular follow-up with your Pediatric Dentist is mandatory after every 6 months to be able to detect such lesions and treat them at the earliest.
Nursing bottle caries is a form of tooth decay that is caused by children sleeping with bottles in their mouths overnight or for a few hours at a stretch.
This is also called Baby bottle or Nursing bottle Syndrome. It is caused when a child goes to bed with a bottle filled with milk or juice--anything except water. It usually affects children between the ages of one and two years. Breastfed infants who fall asleep while breastfeeding is also at risk.
The following are the most common signs and symptoms of nursing caries:
Fluoride varnish is a The dental treatment called Fluoride varnish that can help to prevent tooth decay gradually or even stop it from getting into bad condition. it is made with fluoride, it is such a mineral that can give solidity to the enamel of the tooth.
Kindly note that this kid's dental treatment will not give 100% prevention from cavities. But this child dental treatment will help nicely to prevent decay even when kids will do regular teeth brushing by adding the perfect quantity of toothpaste containing fluoride, flossing habit, meeting best kids’ dentist near you, and having a perfect food habit.
This child dental treatment is quite safe and it is in the regular practice of Pediatrics in India as well as globally to help prevent tooth decay in kids. Very small quantity gets used, and chances of swallowing fluoride are very less.
It does not hurt when the varnish is applied. However, young children may still cry before or during the procedure. Fortunately, brushing on the varnish takes only a few minutes. Also, applying the varnish may be easier when a child is crying because his mouth will be slightly open. You may be asked to hold your child in your lap while you are placed knee-to-knee with the person applying the varnish.
As a parent, you might not be able to know all by yourself regarding whether your child needs fluoride treatment or not. Fluoride strengthens your teeth enamel so ideally, most children are suitable candidates for active in-office fluoride therapy, however, most parts in India have high fluoride content in water and this may reflect in your child's teeth as fluoride stains, so your Pediatric dentist will best tell you whether your child needs fluoride or not. This implies that a visit to a pediatric dentist is a must to know.
Child Age | Recommendation for Fluoride Toothpaste |
Below 4 Years | No Fluoride |
4-6 Years | Once with Fluoridated and once with Non-Fluoridated |
6-12 Years | Twice witg Fluoridated and Once with Non-Fluoridated |
Above 12 Years | Thrice with fluoridated toothpaste |
Every preventive measure is taken to cease the process of rapid tooth structure damage caused due to nursing bottle caries, but still, if that happens, it leads to mass destruction of walls of teeth. Restorations and fillings can then no longer provide a stable long-term solution to the child patient and more often we have to go for full coverage restorations also known as Strip Crowns.
Strip Crowns are transparent plastic molds that are used to restore the shape of the primary tooth to its original form. Our Pediatric Dentists provide you with this Esthetic and Long-Lasting treatment option that offers painless restoration of the lost tooth structure in kids.
Another option for Aesthetic anterior crowns is Zirconia Crowns, which are again tooth-colored crowns that cover the tooth surface as a whole. These crowns shed off along with the primary tooth they are cemented on, not affecting the eruption of the underlying permanent tooth.
In the case of deep decay in primary teeth, pain and swelling cause great discomfort to the child. We advise Pulpectomy (RCT) of the Primary tooth.
It is important to save the baby tooth with RCT as this persistent infection would otherwise travel down and infect the underlying permanent tooth bud causing damage to it as well.
Also if we plan to prematurely extract the primary tooth to avoid pulpectomy (RCT), it would cause the adjacent teeth to migrate or tilt in the extraction space, leading to loss of space that was retained for the underlying permanent successor.
A lot of children since birth acquire oral habits that have deleterious effects on dentition and oral structures. These could be :
Several oral appliances can be given to intervene in these habits and stop their consequences. These appliances can be fixed or removed depending upon the patient's cooperation.
Apart from giving appliances and monitoring them from time to time, our pediatric Dentist would also positively counsel your child, motivate them to wear the appliances, and explain to them how it would help them in the long run.
Dental fear and anxiety is a common problem in pediatric patients. Children are not little adults; they differ physically, psychologically, and emotionally.
As parents we agree, it's not a pleasant experience to see your child crying on the dental chair and struggling every minute to escape the dental procedure. Also, you know the procedure is inevitable and is for his good. What is the solution then?
The Answer is Sedation. Your child can be sedated orally by administering some sedative agent through Drinks or Nitrous Oxide Gas (also known as the Laughing Gas) using a gas mask on the nose. Our Pediatric dentists are well trained and certified to carry out sedation procedures. These procedures are relatively safe and are carried out for short-duration treatment procedures like a single filling, RCT, or tooth extraction.
Sedation does not completely put your child to sleep, which means the child will be well aware of his surroundings but still more relaxed, calm, and inactive to interfere in the procedure.
All the vitals are monitored during the entire sedation procedure and the child can be discharged immediately as soon as the procedure ends and the effects of sedation wear off which usually takes an hour. You can talk to our Pediatric Dental team to know more about sedation.
